2024 Deer Creek FWA Properties Spring Bobwhite Whistle Count

Volunteer to help DNR staff at Deer Creek Fish & Wildlife Area count Northern Bobwhite June 1- June 30th! These observations provide valuable data to monitor changes in populations on the property annually. Volunteer-observers must be able to identify Northern Bobwhite calls and follow observation protocol described below after attending staff-provided training.

 

To participate, volunteers record the number of individual bobwhite's heard calling from specific listening points. Counts begin at sunrise and are not conducted during precipitation events or when winds exceeded 12 mph. Specific observer instructions and survey maps will be provided following project registration approval.

 

Surveys should be conducted twice during the survey period. The routes vary in length but can be up to 15 miles in length and last approximately 1 hour. The use of a vehicle is required for this volunteer opportunity. Routes are available on Deer Creek FWA, Chinook FWA, Wabashiki FWA, Sugar Creek Conservation Area, and Wabash River Conservation Area.
