Summer 2024 Teen Volunteers

Position Overview 

Teen Volunteers will help Library staff with the Summer Reading Club and LibCon program and events during the summer at either Thousand Oaks Library or Newbury Park Library.

 

Key Responsibilities

Volunteers will help with Summer Reading Club or LibCon as directed by a Library staff member. This may include but not be limited to:

  • Help people of all ages sign up for Summer Reading Club on a computer, app or a paper log.
  • Explain how to earn rewards for reading
  • Give out rewards for completing Summer Reading Club challenge
  • Help children make crafts
  • Explain the various weekly activities and contests
  • Be friendly, encouraging, enthusiastic and helpful
  • Work well with Library volunteers and staff
  • Help with Summer events, programs and activities
  • Help as needed as directed by Library staff
  • Complete a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer time

 

Qualifications

All Volunteers:

  • Must be 14-18 and entering High School grades 9-12 in school year 2024/2025
  • Must complete and submit an Interview Form
  • Must be kind, work well with others and helpful at the Library

 

Training and Support Provided:

After applying, the Volunteer Coordinator will send an Interview Form. All Volunteers must complete and fill out an interview form ASAP. 

If they are a qualified candidate, teens will be invited to Orientation Training where they will be trained on everything required to be a Summer Volunteer.

Teens must complete Orientation Training before they can sign up for Volunteer Shifts at the Library. Training Orientations are available starting in April. Early attendance to Orientation Trainings will give you priority to choose Library location and to sign up for shifts that fit your schedule. 

 

Time Commitment:

After Training Orientation, volunteers can sign up for volunteer shifts that fit their schedule. Volunteer shifts are available from June 15 - August 11, 2024. Shifts range from 2-4 hours. We encourage teens to volunteer as much time as possible, but we ask that teens complete a minimum of 20 hours over the course of the summer. If a teen volunteers at least 3 hours each week they will complete the minimum requirement.
